Wedding Food Guide
There are two main concerns to be addressed here: what food will you offer and how will you offer it? The answers are based on time of day and formal versus informal. Cost is an additional deciding factor.
See below for a general guideline of food types based on time of day and type of reception.
Morning: 10 A.M. - 1 P.M.
Type: Champagne breakfast: sit down or buffet
Food: Coffee, teas, Sweet rolls, muffins, buns, crepes, croissants, fruit with fresh cream.
Midday-Noon:
Type: Brunch/lunch: sit-down or buffet
Food: As above plus salads, pasta, cold salmon, chicken, turkey, sorbet and bubbly wines.
Mid to late afternoon (2-5PM)
Type: Open House style reception or tea.
Food:Light buffet with little sandwiches, various cheeses and berries or sliced fruits, mints, nuts, pastries plus tea or coffee varieties and champagne punch.
Late Afternoon - Early evening (4-7PM)
Type: Buffet, food stations or cocktail reception
Food: Cheeses, sliced fruits, seafood, carved meats, pasta, bread selections, champagne and wine.
Evening: (Starting at 6PM on)
Type: Traditional sit-down dinner reception
Food: Cocktails and bite-size nibbles, 3-4 dinner courses such as salad, soup and a main meal of meat (chicken, poultry, fish, beef) served with vegetables.
Late Evening: (Starting at 8PM on)
Type: Station Buffet or sit-down meal reception.
Food: Substantial pre-dinner nibbles, light supper of fish, chicken, pasta and vegetables.
The wedding cake is basically dessert. One bride I know decided to cut costs by offering the choice in advance - placing a "beef or chicken" option in the RSVP (reply/response) card so she would be able to notify the food vendors in advance. This may also be a thoughtful way to introduce vegetarian fare.
Buffet dinners are generally cheaper and personally, from the point of view as a guest, I prefer the buffet. You get to choose what you like from a variety, and you can eat more! While I went with the formal dinner for my wedding, if I could do it over again, I would have opted for the buffet style - it can be very thoughtul and considerate in terms of handling your guests particular likes and dislikes. I really had no idea what to expect at the time!
A formal setting usually involves a sit down dinner with various pre-set courses. It costs more to offer choices to your guests the day of the celebration itself since the catering vendors have to have enough either way.
What happens in the car?
If you hire a limousine to transport you between venues, such as from the place where the ceremony occurs to the reception, it is advisable to bring your own selection of drinks since in the past where champagne has been supplied, some of the guests have been unhappy that their particular likes and dislikes have not been catered for.
With a small cooler, you can offer your guests their own range and keep everyone happy for less. The limousine should come stocked with glasses in addition to places for champagne bottles and ice. Make sure you let the limousine company know in advance if you require extra ice - they will only be too happy to help out.
